                                                                                                                                                September 2015

    Dear Parents,

Welcome back to a new school year at Andrew Jackson Language Academy. I am looking forward to an exciting year with your child in Italian class. This year, we will be using Class Dojo. We will be using this program as an incentive for students to do well individually and as a while group. The students are working hard to earn points for a fun day during class I welcome everyone to come visit the Italian classroom throughout the year.

Kindergarten, first, and second grade Italian program is classroom centered. Please look for vocabulary lists to help reinforce vocabulary at home. The students will love teaching you Italian and they will help you with the pronunciation and meanings.

Beginning in third grade, the Italian students begin to study grammar and the written word. It is very important that the students bring their supplies to class everyday. The students are expected to bring their assignment notebooks and record their assignments each day, along with a pencil and a folder for Italian.

Students in 3rd-8th grades will be tested bi-weekly in Italian vocabulary and grammar. It is the student’s responsibility to be proactive and turn in assignments on time and to study for these tests. We will review the assignments in class and due dates will be given.

The seventh grade students will visit The Art Institute in the spring, as part of their third quarter art history unit. This tradition has become an exciting part of seventh grade.

I took students and parents to Italy and France this summer. It was an amazing experience for everyone! The students spoke Italian the moment we were on the plane, and they taught the other groups, and their parents many helpful phrases in Italian. The Italian and French students taught each other their languages to ”survive” in their countries. It is a wonderful opportunity for the students to apply their knowledge in Italy and France.

I will continue to monitor students’ behaviors using the 7 Habits, which allows them to be proactive in the choices that they make socially and academically. The students will be tracking their academic progress with the goal of holding student led conferences in the third quarter.

Thank you for your support and cooperation as your child studies the Italian language. Please check the Italian page on our website for updates:

We will be spending the year learning the basics of the language including numbers, colors, asking and answering questions, learning songs, poems, games, and cultural information. Please look for vocabulary sheets to help your child study. Children love to teach, so please encourage them to teach you their songs and poems! Let me know if I can answer any questions you may have.

I look forward to beginning the Italian journey with your child. Please check the Italian page at www.andrewjackson.cps.edu for information!
